Last Thursday, Instinct Foot had the privilege of hosting Nicolas Chabot on its weekly show “On s’en foot”, where the FC Nantes coach reflected on his team’s historic season.
Several topics were discussed: Nantes’ successful first year in D1 Arkema, the coach’s methods, his playing philosophy, communication in women’s football, and his thoughts on the French national team.

Mission accomplished: Staying up in D1

This season, the Nantes women’s team has impressed with their level, intensity, and consistency. They held the PFC to two draws, lost narrowly to PSG, and even scored against OL Lyon.

“Within the squad, we set ourselves the goal to go beyond simple survival,” said Chabot.

The coach remains cautious, aware of how difficult it is to stay competitive in the elite.

A participative and inspired approach

Heavily influenced by Spanish football, Chabot builds his philosophy around possession, communication, and shared responsibility.
Players actively contribute to the creation of training sessions and match plans.

“Ideas are tested during the week, then refined through discussion,” he explains.
This collaborative and human management style strengthens team unity and performance.

From D2 to D1: a well-prepared transition

Recruitment was key: bringing in experienced players aligned with the club’s values while nurturing young talent.
A long but well-structured preseason ensured a smooth step up to top-flight football.

“Football is about risk and reward”

An advocate of attacking football, Chabot admits:

“I’d rather win 3–2 than 1–0. The way we attack defines how we defend once we lose the ball.”
For him, a season is a marathon, not a sprint, and adaptability is essential.

Emily Burns: a key figure

Canadian goalkeeper Emily Burns plays a vital role in the Nantes system. Her distribution and footwork have raised the technical level of the squad, making her indispensable in Chabot’s philosophy.

Playing, smiling, sharing

The FC Nantes women’s team embodies strong values: team play, respect, joy, and human connection.
Their unity and communication shine both on and off the field.

“We must unite to exist in Europe”

Addressing the current state of French football, Chabot expressed concern for the women’s and youth sectors.

“We must unite our strengths to remain relevant on the European stage.”
He remains optimistic, emphasizing teamwork and collective effort as the keys to progress.

On the French women’s national team

“The more France performs, the more attractive our women’s football becomes,” he said.
Chabot values this period of rebuilding and insists on creating a strong collective identity.
